Carnegie libraries visited: Ballinger

Most of the things I packed for this trip purely for functional reasons: towels, socks, battery charger, and so forth. A few items had both functional and symbolic value to me. I brought one Dansk porcelain dinner plate and cereal bowl. The edges are decorated with peaches, pears, blueberries, strawberries, and leaves in all the vibrant shades.
Shortly after Lisa (my first wife) and I separated, I drove to Ocean City for a weekend on the beach just to remind me that I could still enjoy life. On route I passed a Dansk outlet store. I walked in to look around and walked out with a box of porcelain dinnerware: my first post-separation purchase. I knew that my life was going to materially change for the worse, as the first place I lived post-separation was an efficiency apartment I sublet from one of my students. Humiliating. The Dansk dinnerware signified to me that I was not a complete loser. Anyway, when I opened the door this morning the bowl fell out and broke.
I replaced it with a durable plastic one. Life moves on.
